Developments in technology are allowing for new innovations in online gambling, according to one industry expert.

The Global Betting and Gambling Consultants (GBGC) predicted that as broadband access increases and connection speeds improve people will soon be able to watch live horse racing on their mobile phones.

Warwick Bartlett, chief executive of the GBGC, said: "Mobile phone technology is improving all the while so you'll be able to get services on the move.

"There are a lot of improvements for the industry to look forward to."

He added that while there are some games that people are familiar with like poker, roulette and blackjack, the customer does get tired of playing the same thing and eventually wants a new challenge.

This creates a need for the operators to come up with new ideas and to refresh their sites, Warwick says.

Figures published by the Gambling Commission last October revealed that over the four quarters leading up to September 2007, 8.7 per cent of the 8,000 adults surveyed said they had participated in at least one form of remote gambling.

Remote gambling includes betting through a computer, mobile phone or interactive/digital TV.
